Another view of the "Boland Belle", shewing the (working) valve gear.
indentAfter the first exhibition had been
managed with only two engines, more were urgently required for future bookings; primarily
to save the operator's sanity!
indentOnce the decision had been made to build something
which might approximate to the original Boland Belle of the story (a gnome's version of
"Locomotion"?), the chance was taken to design something which had the
valve-gear where you could see it - stuck up on top! Because of the contrapuntal
movement which "quartered" coupling rods produce, the motion is absolutely
fascinating to watch in action; sort of all cranks and elbows like a cat which has just
run through something rather smelling of dog; if you will excuse the analogy!
